I've started with the Arduino Nano, which is good for controlling two steppers and an external trigger. But the pi has the major advantage that you have a User Interface, where you can control the camera. Furthermore, there will be many more features, that would not be possible with the Arduino. I am currently working on cloud-processing of the 3d model, so you just need to press "scan" and get a full 3d model. This will never be possible with a simple MCU like the Arduino (at least with photogrammetry :)
